As you are all aware our school is taking part in the ―green home programme‖ developed by An Taisce. It is a two year programme and on completion of this programme we will be awarded our fifth green flag. But we need to work really hard to achieve this!
The aim of the programme is to reduce waste produced, energy used, water usage and reduce our carbon footprint by working on cycling to school. Households started the programme by logging onto the Green home website www.greenhome.ie and completing the Green Home survey.
Children in 3rd, 4th, and 5th classes were asked to take part in the first challenge –
―Slim your Bin. This involved tasks carried out over five weeks – encouraging households to reduce waste – food, packaging etc, to recycle and to consider composting organic waste. To date, 188 households have returned their challenge booklets and will be awarded certificates by ―An Taisce.
The second stage of the programme was launched on Monday 25th January by Dorothy Steward from ―An Taisce with 5th and 6th classes. This challenge will take six weeks and households are encouraged to reduce energy consumption – electricity, gas, oil, solid fuels etc. The contents and information contained in the challenge booklet is quite difficult and while teachers will help and encourage the children they will need parental guidance and input to successfully complete the challenges.
When the challenge booklets are completed they will be sent into ―An Taisce‖ and again certificates awarded to participating households. Our degree of participation is measured by the number of booklets returned – so obviously this is very important – we need all households to get involved!
