St. Oliver Plunkett School, Malahide

What was the talk of the town before Christmas, what was the main topic of conversation at dinner tables on Christmas Day, what was causing such a stir  – it was of course the Junior School Concert.  And anyone who attend could not have left the hall without feeling that this was a professional group at work, such was the style and pace of each and every performance.

A huge thanks to everyone involved – parents, teachers, production crew and above all the wonderful children.  Take a well-deserved bow one and all.

Pictured  are members of the The Grand Hotel Team donating some of the hampers to Rachel Markey and Liam McDonagh, representatives of the St. Vincent de Paul, along with pupils from our school.

These donations will go a long way to making this Christmas extra special for those less fortunate. A massive thank you to all staff at The Grand Hotel, Malahide who contributed so generously to the St. Vincent de Paul Christmas hamper appeal.

URGENT URGENT URGENT

Can YOU help our appeal for toys this Christmas. We are looking for ‘new toys’ for under our tree in the school for those children around Dublin who have very little this Christmas. Our helping hands food appeal is going really well but WE NEED MORE TOYS!! If you have a toy please drop it up to the school asap so we can help someone’s Christmas be even more special.

Today was a nostalgic moment in time as the last ever hard-copy of our Schoolnews was printed and distributed to our school families.  As all families are now contactable by email and being a Green School it would not be in keeping with our Green School Policy to keep distributing paper copies of the news.  From January all parents will receive their news by email and, of course, the News will continue to be available on-line.

The School News has been a  feature of school life,
distributed monthly in its present format for 32 years as well as many special editions on other unique occasions.  The first Newsletter was in handwritten format run off on a spirit duplicator in 1975 with a big move to an ink duplicator in 1978 and to its present format in 1982.  A potted history of the news will follow.

For now, it’s goodbye to the old ways and into the new.  Our special thanks to Claudia who beaveres away into the small hours to produce the magic each month.

Our sixth classes have just started their ‘Cycle Safety’ course in accordance with Fingal council. Every Wednesday for 6 weeks we learn to cycle safely and learn to use the different ‘cycling’ signals in order to keep us safe on the roads.

It is really important to be ‘road-wise’ on your bike and every Wednesday we learn new techniques on our bikes as well as the rules of the road which are so important in keeping us safe. Wearing a helmet alone can reduce the risk of injury by more than 85% and it is also the law to wear one. Its all about what to wear, what to do and where it is safe to ride our bikes. We are really enjoying this important training.
